Manuscript Writing and Submission Guidelines
The Journal of Palestine Studies publishes original research in the disciplines of History, International Relations, Political Science, and Economics, for which the journal has dedicated Section Editors on its editorial board; manuscripts whose primary focus falls outside these areas will be rejected at the desk review stage.
Manuscripts that do not comply with the journal template or do not comply with the writing rules will be returned to the authors. Manuscripts that include the author’s name or other identifying information in the main manuscript file will also be returned. Please pay careful attention to these requirements before submitting your manuscript.
Submitted manuscripts are first reviewed by the Editorial Board. Manuscripts approved by the Editorial Board are placed in the publication queue and subsequently sent to referees in accordance with the journal’s peer-review procedure. Submission to the journal does not guarantee that a manuscript will be sent to referees. Manuscripts that do not receive Editorial Board approval will not be forwarded for peer review.
The overall process depends on several factors, including the Editorial Board’s preliminary assessment, the peer-review process, and the order in which manuscripts are accepted for publication. The entire process may take up to 12 months, and the publication process may take longer depending on these factors.
To encourage author diversity in our journal, an author whose article has been published may submit a new study only after at least 4 issues have passed.
In the Journal, co-authored articles based on student–faculty member and/or student–advisor relationships are not considered for evaluation.

- Manuscripts submitted to the journal must be prepared in Microsoft Word (MS Word) using the official article template provided on the journal’s website.
- Submitted manuscripts, including the abstract, footnotes, and bibliography, must be between 6,000 and 10,000 words in length. Manuscripts outside this word limit will be returned to the authors without entering the review process.
- Author information, including the full name, academic title, institutional affiliation (university, faculty, and department), city/country, email address, and ORCID iD, must not be included in the main manuscript file. This information must be provided in a separate Title Page file.
- All manuscripts submitted in Turkish must include the title, abstract, and keywords in English. Manuscripts written in English are also required to include a Turkish title, abstract, and keywords, except when the author is not proficient in Turkish.
- The abstract must contain at least 250 words.
- The Keywords section must contain at least five words or phrases, ranging from general to specific terms that indicate the subject matter of the manuscript. At least one keyword must be “Palestine.”
- Priority is given to articles written in English. Authors who wish to do so may also publish their articles in a bilingual format within the same PDF file, with the English version presented first, followed by the Turkish version.
8. The manuscript must provide a substantive and up-to-date review of the relevant literature, either integrated into the Introduction or presented under a separate heading, and clearly identify the study’s contribution to the existing literature.
- Manuscripts must be prepared using the official journal template. Authors must paste the manuscript text after the Introduction using Merge Formatting, apply the predefined heading styles, and ensure that no custom styles are added to the Styles pane.
- The predefined heading styles provided in the Styles gallery on the Home tab must be applied consistently and strictly. Authors must not make manual formatting modifications to these predefined styles.
- The article title must not be entered manually as body text. Instead, it must be entered exclusively in the art_title custom document property through File > Info > Properties > Advanced Properties. All other fields, including the author name field, must be left blank. After entering the title, authors must update the corresponding title field in the document by pressing F9.
- Footnotes and the bibliography must be prepared in accordance with The Chicago Manual of Style, 18th edition (Notes and Bibliography). The first citation of each source must provide the full bibliographic details, while subsequent citations must use the appropriate shortened citation form. Abbreviations such as ibid. or a.g.e. must not be used.
- Because Microsoft Word’s built-in Chicago style uses an author–date citation system rather than the Notes and Bibliography system, authors are recommended to use external reference management software such as Zotero, EndNote, or Mendeley, through their respective Word plugins, with the Chicago (Notes and Bibliography) style selected for creating footnote citations and bibliographies.
- DOI numbers must be included in the bibliography for all cited works that have an assigned DOI.
- Authors must accurately complete and incorporate all mandatory declaration statements specified in the manuscript template into the final manuscript before submission. These include author contribution rates, competing interests, use of AI, copyright and licensing, acknowledgments, financial funding, and ethics committee approval, where applicable.
- Appendices are placed at the end of the article and presented under a single Appendices heading. Subheadings may be added under this heading to organize and identify individual appendix materials.
- Manuscripts submitted in Turkish must include an Extended Abstract of 750–1,000 words, with a title, beginning on a new page after the bibliography.
For detailed information, please carefully read the instructions and warnings provided in the official manuscript template.
