The association between religion, spirituality, mental health, and well-being has been a subject of growing interest and research field. This article presents a selective review of the literature to examine the intricate interplay between these constructs and their implications for psychopathology and well-being. The findings reveal a complex relationship between religion, spirituality, and mental health outcomes. On the one hand, numerous studies highlight the potential positive impact of religious and spiritual beliefs and practices on mental health and well-being.. However, the relationship is not without its complexities. Some studies suggest potential negative effects associated with religious and spiritual beliefs, such as religiously based guilt, fear, or rigid dogma, which may contribute to psychological distress or maladaptive coping strategies. The impact of religion and spirituality on mental health outcomes can vary across individuals and cultural contexts, emphasizing the need to consider diversity and individual differences. Factors such as religious affiliation, level of religious involvement, and the personal interpretation of religiousness/spirituality may moderate the relationship between these constructs. Regarding psychopathology, findings are mixed, with some studies reporting a protective effect of religiosity or spirituality, while others find no significant relationship or even potential risk factors. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for mental health professionals in providing culturally sensitive and inclusive care. Future research should aim to address limitations, such as employing longitudinal designs and diverse samples, to deepen our understanding of these relationships and their implications for mental health and well-being.
