An Analysis of Palestinian-Jewish encounters in 19th century Palestine: the historical sociology of the transformation from “neighbour” to “belligerent rival”
Öz
Palestine has begun to
witness socio-economic and demographic transformations as of the 19th
century. The onset of the Jewish immigration with the 1st Aliyah was
a first step on the way of the creation of a Jewish community there. After the
first encounter in 1882, the Jews and Arabs began to live together on the same
soil but their relations would enter to a new phase as of the 2nd
Aliyah. The Arabs have gradually become dispossessed from and alienated to
their own land; hence they have become disadvantaged vis-à-vis the Jews who
were prospering via becoming the landowners and thus a permanent element of
Palestine. In consequence the Arabs have entered into a deprival situation and
begun to feel an existential threat. This feeling of threat and fear would
generate a situation of unresolvable uncertainty. This step corresponded as
well to the beginning of a process during which the Arabs would question the
intentions of the incoming Jews and their share in the rapid transformation on
their lives. The answer was still ambiguous. How were the Jews received by the
Arabs while they endeavoured buying land, building moshavas and were busy with
cultivating the land? What was the impression of the first encounters? Within
this background, this study aims to analyse how the social structure of
Palestine has been changed with the Jewish Aliyahs. This study further seeks to
reveal the roles of the actors and their impact on this transformation. To this
end, the relationship developed between the indigenous Arabs and immigrant Jews
is examined. Thereby, the roots of the Israeli-Palestinian question could be
introduced via the historical sociological approach.

19. YÜZYIL SONUNDA FİLİSTİN’DE ARAP-YAHUDİ KARŞILAŞMASININ BİR İNCELEMESİ: KOMŞUDAN HASIMA DÖNÜŞÜMÜN TARİHSEL SOSYOLOJİSİ
Öz
Filistin 19. yüzyıldan itibaren sosyo-ekonomik ve
demografik dönüşümler yaşamaya başlamıştır. Filistin’e Yahudi göçlerinin
başladığı I. Aliya burada yeni bir Yahudi topluluğunun yaratılması için atılmış
ilk adımdır. 1882 yılındaki ilk karşılaşmalarından sonra aynı topraklarda
yaşamaya başlayan Araplar ve Yahudilerin ilişkileri 1904 yılında başlayan II.
Aliya’dan itibaren yeni bir aşamaya girmiştir. Giderek mülksüzleşen ve kendi
toprağında yabancı duruma düşen Arapların, Filistin’de toprak sahibi olarak
zenginleşen ve kalıcı bir unsur haline gelen Yahudiler karşısında dezavantajlı
konuma düşmesi ve bunun neticesinde mahrumiyet hissiyatına düşerek, Yahudilerin
varlığından, kendi varoluşlarının devamına yönelik bir korku duymaya başlaması
Filistin’de çözümlenemeyen bir belirsizlik durumu meydana getirecektir. Bu aynı
zamanda orada yaşayan Arapların gelmekte olan Yahudilerin niyetlerini
sorgulayarak, yaşamlarındaki bu hızlı dönüşümde onların payının ne olduğuna
dair soruların sorulduğu bir sürecin başlangıcına da tekabül eder. Cevap ise
henüz muğlaktır. Yahudiler hummalı bir şekilde toprak alımı, moşava inşası ve
toprağı işlemekle meşgulken yerli halkın gözünde nasıl karşılanmaktaydılar? İlk
karşılaşmalar nasıl bir intiba uyandırmıştır? Bu arka plan ışığında çalışmada
19. Yüzyılın son çeyreğinden itibaren Osmanlı Filistin’ine başlayan Yahudi
göçleriyle beraber Filistin’de toplumsal yapının nasıl dönüştüğü analiz
edilmekte, bu dönüşümdeki aktörlerin ve politikaların neler olduğu ortaya
koyulmakta ve yerli halk Araplar ile göçmen topluluk Yahudilerin tarihsel
süreçte birbirleriyle geliştirdikleri ilişkilerin izleri sürülmektedir.
Böylelikle bugün halen çözülmemiş olan Filistin-İsrail sorununun köklerine
yönelik tarihsel sosyolojik bir yaklaşım geliştirilmesi amaçlanmaktadır.
